नई दिल्ली। अमेरिकी राष्ट्रपति बराक ओबामा ने कहा है कि पिछले कुछ वर्षों में भारत में सभी धर्मों के बीच व्याप्त ‘असहिष्णुता के कृत्य’ से महात्मा गांधी स्तब्ध रह जाते। ओबामा का मंतव्य समझा जाए तो अगर आज बापू होते तो फूट-फूट कर रोते।
ओबामा का भारत यात्रा के दौरान धार्मिक सहिष्णुता के मुद्दे पर नई दिल्ली में दिए गए उनके सार्वजनिक भाषण को भाजपा पर अप्रत्यक्ष हमला माना जा रहा था। हालांकि व्हाइट हाउस ने बुधवार को इन आरोपों को सिरे से खारिज किया कि धार्मिक सहिष्णुता पर ओबामा की टिप्पणी सत्तारूढ़ भारतीय जनता पार्टी की ओर इशारा थी। उसने कहा कि भाषण पूरी तरह से अमेरिका और भारत के ‘मूल लोकतांत्रिक मूल्यों और सिद्धांतों’ पर आधारित था।
इस वर्ष के ‘नेशनल प्रेयर ब्रेकफास्ट’ के दौरान (President Obama Joins the Dalai Lama at This Year's National Prayer Breakfast) अपनी टिप्पणी में ओबामा ने कहा, ‘मिशेल और मैं भारत से वापस लौटे हैं। अतुलनीय, सुन्दर देश, भव्य विविधताओं से भरा हुआ, लेकिन वहीं पिछले कुछ वर्षों में कई मौकों पर दूसरे धर्म के अन्य लोगों ने सभी धर्मों के लोगों को निशाना बनाया है, ऐसा सिर्फ अपनी विरासत और आस्था के कारण हुआ है। यह असहिष्णु व्यवहार देश को उदार बनाने में मदद करने वाले गांधीजी को स्तब्ध कर दिया होता।’

हाल ही में भारत से लौटे अमेरिकी राष्ट्रपति पिछले कुछ वर्षों में देश के विभिन्न धर्मों के लोगों द्वारा एक-दूसरे पर किए गए हमलों का हवाला दे रहे थे। बराक ओबामा ने किसी धर्म विशेष का नाम नहीं लिया और कहा कि हिंसा किसी एक समूह या धर्म से नहीं जुड़ा हुआ है।

From a school in Pakistan to the streets of Paris, we have seen violence and terror perpetrated by those who profess to stand up for faith, their faith, professed to stand up for Islam, but, in fact, are betraying it. We see ISIL, a brutal, vicious death cult that, in the name of religion, carries out unspeakable acts of barbarism — terrorizing religious minorities like the Yezidis, subjecting women to rape as a weapon of war, and claiming the mantle of religious authority for such actions.
We see sectarian war in Syria, the murder of Muslims and Christians in Nigeria, religious war in the Central African Republic, a rising tide of anti-Semitism and hate crimes in Europe, so often perpetrated in the name of religion.

तीन हजार से ज्यादा अमेरिकी और अंतरराष्ट्रीय नेताओं को संबोधित करते हुए ओबामा ने कहा, ‘पूरे मानव इतिहास में मानवता इन सवालों से जूझती रही है। और हम उन सभी से खुद को अलग करके सोचते हैं कि यह सिर्फ कुछ जगहों का मामला है, लेकिन याद करें धर्मयुद्ध (क्रूसेड) और धार्मिक न्याय के दौरान लोगों ने क्राइस्ट (यीशू मसीह) के नाम पर कितने वीभत्स कर्म किए थे।’

"For 63 years, this prayer tradition has brought us together, giving us the opportunity to come together in humility before the Almighty and to be reminded of what it is that we share as children of God."

उन्होंने कहा, ‘हमारे गृह राष्ट्र में, दासता और जिम क्रो (राज्य और राष्ट्र के कानूनों में नस्ल के आधार पर भेदभाव) को भी अक्सर ईसा मसीह के नाम पर सही ठहराया गया।’ उन्होंने कहा, ‘हममें एक आदत है, गलत आदत जो हमारी आस्था को रोकती और उसका स्वरूप बिगाड़ती है। वर्तमान दुनिया में जब घृणा फैलाने वाले समूहों का अपना ट्विटर अकाउंट है और धर्मांधता साइबर दुनिया में छुपे हुए जगहों पर पनप रही है, ऐसे में इस प्रकार की असहिष्णुता से निपटना और मुश्किल है।’

Lest we get on our high horse and think this is unique to some other place, remember that during the Crusades and the Inquisition, people committed terrible deeds in the name of Christ. In our home country, slavery and Jim Crow all too often was justified in the name of Christ. Michelle and I returned from India — an incredible, beautiful country, full of magnificent diversity — but a place where, in past years, religious faiths of all types have, on occasion, been targeted by other peoples of faith, simply due to their heritage and their beliefs — acts of intolerance that would have shocked Gandhiji, the person who helped to liberate that nation.

ओबामा ने कहा, ‘लेकिन ईश्वर हमें कोशिश करने को बाध्य करता है।’ अमेरिका की भांति 27 जनवरी को नयी दिल्ली में ‘टाउन हॉल’ संबोधन में ओबामा ने धार्मिक सहिष्णुता का मुद्दा उठाया था और भारत को चेताया था कि भारत उस वक्त तक सफल बना रहेगा जब तक वह धार्मिक आधार पर नहीं बंटता।

The United States is one of the most religious countries in the world — far more religious than most Western developed countries. And one of the reasons is that our founders wisely embraced the separation of church and state. Our government does not sponsor a religion, nor does it pressure anyone to practice a particular faith, or any faith at all. And the result is a culture where people of all backgrounds and beliefs can freely and proudly worship, without fear, or coercion.
