PRESS RELEASE
AIDWA condemns the heinous gang rape and murder of two teenaged girls in Badaun district of UP during the night of May 29th 2014. The two girls, belonging to a poor, OBC community, were reportedly raped and murdered by a group of Yadav boys belonging to the same village of Katra. It is shocked by the barbaric nature of the assault, - medical evidence reveals that the girls were not only gang raped but also strung up on trees even while they were alive. The apathy of the police on receiving reports of the girls’s absence once again highlights the irresponsibility and lack of accountability of the police in such cases.
While the perpetrators of this horrendous crime have been arrested, and some action has been initiated against the erring police personnel, AIDWA demands that the investigation into the crime be conducted as speedily as possible. A fast track Court should be set up for this purpose, and an early verdict should be delivered, without sparing any of the culprits. There should be appropriate punishment meted out to the police personnel guilty of dereliction of duty also.
A delegation comprising of AIDWA General Secretary Jagmati Sangwan, and JMS General Secretary Sehba Farooqi is visiting the area today. The UP committee is submitting a memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh.
AIDWA will take up the fight for justice to the two girls, in UP, as well as at the all India level. A protest march will be held in Delhi, on Saturday May 30th, 2014. Protest marches will be organized in other state headquarters also condemning the alarming incidence of violence against women, in UP, and in other parts of the country.
