New Delhi. Delhi state All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA) organised a convention of live-out domestic workers attended by more than 350 women from across the Capital. A survey report "Striving for Dignity" was released by Brinda Karat and representatives from other women's organisations and unions like CITU attended the meeting. Representatives of the International Labour Organisation were also present. Around 15 domestic workers areas across Delhi shared their experiences and highlighted their abysmal social and economic conditions. It was pointed out that they are the target of social discrimination and verbal and physical abuse, and there is no standard for ensuring wages and dignified working conditions.
The Convention focused on a demand charter which deals with both issues of dignity of work and working conditions. A call was given to intensify the fight for the recognition of domestic workers and their registration as workers. It was emphasized that they should take the next step of organising themselves and fighting for the ten point demand charter released by the organisation.
