25 June shall mark the forty first anniversary of the imposition of emergency in India. While in 1975 emergency was imposed by the Congress led by Late Mrs. Indira Gandhi after an High Court judgment. Its victims included, apart from India’s working masses, the sections of the ruling classes in opposition.
With the coming to power of the Modi led NDA government at the centre both the imposition of these anti people policies and the repression on different sections of the population has gained heightened stridency. A blatant attack has been unleashed by the Modi government to undermine various public institutions in furtherance of its fascist Hindutva agenda. All round attack on institutions of higher education, saffronization of research and cultural institutions, attacks on writers, artists and progressive intellectuals, undermining of the judiciary as reflected in the acquittal of Hindu fascist criminals in Ishrat Jahan, Gulbarga society verdicts, Malegaon blast and other cases of attacks directed against Muslims, continued repression on tribals, dalits, various nationalities and the working class are just a few examples of this fascists onslaught on the people of India. In this atmosphere it becomes all the more necessary for all progressive sections of the Indian society to remind ourselves of the black day of 25 June, 1975 when Emergency was imposed in the country in order to renew our commitment towards resistance against the present undeclared emergency. On the occasion of the forty first anniversary of imposition of Emergency the above organizations are holding a meeting to commemorate the anti-emergency day. We solicit your participation in this meeting.
