Citizens Appeal to Aam Admi Party Leadership
We concerned citizens are anxiously observing the developments of past few days in Aam Admi Party which were triggered by a letter of Admiral Ramdas – the independent ombudsman or internal Lokpal of the party. The letter addressed to the National Executive and Political Advisory Committee, which is in public domain, have flagged the breakdown of internal communication within the top leadership of the party and also identified that there are two camps within the top leadership with divergent views on core principles on which the party was formed.
The concern of Admiral Ramdas was supplemented by other communications among the party leaders and decision making body raising the issues of transparency and decision making process within the party. While we acknowledge and respect the fact that resolution of these issues are internal matter of the party and hope that the party will overcome this challenge collectively and live up to the expectations and goodwill the party was bestowed upon by the society.
We consider that Aam Adami Party is no ordinary phenomenon; it is rather a culmination of nation- wide social churning which started with the movement led by Anna Hazare. The inherent spirit of the agitation and the party was not just to fight corruption but also the ‘swaraj’ through transparent and participatory governance with collective decision making.
The party soon after its formation caught the public imagination with its resolve of practicing alternative politics and zero tolerance on adopting unethical means which are part and parcel of other so called mainstream political parties.
Recent overwhelming support Aam Admi Party received in Delhi election is an expression of a hope society sees for a need of an alternative space in the existing political system with a dominant high command culture where there is almost no room for divergent views and internal democracy. People of India have extended faith on Aam Admi Party despite a vicious campaign against it by political parties and also by corporate controlled media. With this massive support common man wants that this experiment of alternative politics and participatory democracy should become a continuous trend.
Needless to say that economically and socially marginalized sections like dalits, tribals, women and minorities are looking forward for a political platform with a hope to get justice through representation and governance.
In mid 80s similar euphoria was witnessed with the surprise victory of Asom Gana Parishad in Assam where students’ union formed a government under leadership of Prafull Kumar Mohanta. But the experiment of a new idea in politics soon faded out as AGP adopted the prevalent political culture. Space for political alternative which emerged after JP movement also could not sustain itself for long because of becoming prey of pragmatic politics.
Therefore we appeal to the leadership of Aam Admi Party to resolve their internal differences with a dialogue and conciliation and thus keeping the spirits of internal democracy alive. We are concerned that any setback to an experiment of participatory democracy will have long term consequences on Indian politics and on the moral of citizens who are making genuine efforts to achieve the constitutional ask of equity and justice.
