৪০ বছর পরও বাসন্তীরা বাসন্তীই রয়ে গেছে
১৯৭৪ সালের কথা। দেশজুড়ে তখন করাল দুর্ভিক্ষ। দৈনিক ইত্তেফাকে প্রকাশিত একটি ছবি বিশ্বময় ঝড় তুলেছিলো। সেসময়ের ক্ষমতাসীন সরকারের তখতে তাউস নাড়িয়ে দিয়েছিলো। ছবির নায়িকা কুড়িগ্রামের চিলমারীর বাসন্তী। ১৯৭৪ সালে দুর্ভিক্ষের সংবাদ সংগ্রহ করতে দৈনিক ইত্তেফাকের রিপোর্টার শফিকুল কবির আর আলোকচিত্রী আফতাব আহমেদ গিয়েছিলেন কুড়িগ্রামে। এমনিতেই এঅঞ্চলের মানুষ মঙ্গাপিড়ীত থাকে বছরের বেশ খানিকটা সময়। তার উপরে '৭৪-এর ভয়াবহ মনান্তর। ক্ষুধার জ্বালায় দিশেহারা মানুষ খড়-কুটা থেকে শুরু করে যা পেয়েছে তাই খেয়ে ক্ষুন্নবিৃত্তি করেছে।

মাছধরার জাল পড়া সেই বাসন্তী পাশে তার বোন দূর্গতী

সাংবাদিক শফিকুল কবীর আর আফতাব আহমেদ দুর্ভিক্ষে অসহায় মানুষের সংবাদ সংগ্রহ করতে করতে পৌঁছান চিলমারী বাজারের অদূরে মাঝিপাড়ায় বাসন্তীদের বাড়ীতে। দূর্ভিক্ষের পাশাপাশি ভয়াল বন্যায় বাসন্তিদের তখন চরম দুর্বিসহ দিন কাটছে। এখানেই বাসন্তী আর তার চাচাতো বোন দুর্গতি'র ছবি তোলেন আফতাব আহমেদ। এই ছবিতে দেখা যায় খাবারের জন্য বাসন্তি আর দুর্গতি কলাগাছের পাতার গোড়ার অংশ সংগ্রহ করছে। পরনের ছেঁড়া শাড়ীর সাথে ছেঁড়া জাল গায়ে জড়িয়ে তারা সম্ভ্রম রক্ষার চেষ্টা করছে।

ছবিটি দৈনিক ইত্তেফাকের প্রথম পৃষ্ঠায় গুরুত্ব দিয়ে ছাপা হয়। এই ছবি ছাপা হবার পর হৈ-চৈ পড়ে যায়। তৎকালীন আওয়ামী সরকারের ভাবমূর্তি প্রশ্নবিদ্ধ হয়ে পড়ে বিশ্বময়। বাসন্তী'র সেই ছবি হয়ে ওঠে চুয়াত্তরে বাংলাদেশের দুর্ভিক্ষের 'ব্রান্ড এ্যাম্বাসেডর'।

এই ছবি প্রকাশের অন্তত: একযুগ পরে এই ছবির সত্যাসত্য নিয়ে প্রশ্ন তোলেন কেউ কেউ। বলা হয়- অপুষ্ট, বুদ্ধি এবং বাক প্রতিবন্ধী কিশোরী বাসন্তীর 'ফটোসেশন' করতে তাকে নগদ পঞ্চাশ টাকা দেয়া হলে বাসন্তী ছবি তুলতে রাজী হয়। সাংবাদিক শফিকুল কবীর আর আফতাব আহমেদকে সংবাদ সংগ্রহে সহায়তাকারী সেসময়ের চিলমারীর অস্থায়ী চেয়ারম্যান আনছার আলী একটি ছেঁড়া জাল পরিয়ে বাসন্তী এবং দুর্গতিকে কলাগাছের পাতা কাটতে বললে তারা তা করতে থাকে। আর তাদের সেই কাজের ছবি তোলেন আফতাব আহমেদ। এই ছবির তীব্র সমালোচনা করে অনেক বুদ্ধিজীবী একে তৎকালীন সরকারকে অস্থিতিশীল করা এবং শেখ মুজিব হত্যা ষড়যন্ত্রের সাথে ধারাবাহিক যোগসূত্রের কথাও বলেন।
