Khaleda may seek India’s coop to 'restore democracy'

BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia is likely to seek New Delhi’s strong support to “restore democracy” in Bangladesh.

A party leader said the BNP chief may raise the matter during her scheduled meeting with visiting Indian prime minister Narendra Modi on Sunday afternoon.

Khaleda may try to gain confidence of the BJP-led government putting aside any misunderstanding.

The BNP leader’s meeting with Modi will be closely watched by political observers.

When contacted, BNP standing committee member Mahbubur Rahman said the BNP chief is likely to seek cooperation of India and Modi for the “restoration of democracy” in Bangladesh during the meeting.

“India is our very close neighbour where democracy stands on a solid ground. As democracy in Bangladesh is now obstructed, we can seek our neighbour’s help to put it on track.”

He said the BNP chief will congratulate the Indian prime minster for passing the constitution amendment bill to operationalise the Land Boundary Agreement.

Mahbub said Khaleda may discuss with Modi as to how the relations between Bangladesh and India and people of the two countries can be strengthened further.

Mentioning that BNP-and BJP relation historical, he said the BNP chief is likely to seek Modi’s cooperation in consolidating BNP and BJP ties further forgetting previous confusion and misunderstanding.

She will also discuss as to how BNP and India can restore confidence in each other for the betterment of the people of the two countries.

Though the time is very short, Mahbub said Khaleda will discuss with Modi different issues like Teesta agreement, water sharing problem, trade deficit, and border issue. “We want the two countries resolve the longstanding problems in a win-win situation through talks.”

Apart from the above issues, the BNP leader said Bangladesh’s latest political situation, January-5 election and city polls may come for discussion at the meeting.

A source close to Khaleda said the BNP chief will finalise her delegation members and talking points for the meeting with Modi at Hotel Sonargaon in consultation with party senior leaders on Saturday night.
A BNP leader wishing anonymity said a BNP high-level team is extensively working on the strategic points which Khaleda will raise during her brief meeting with Modi.

The leader said Indian side has requested Khaleda Zia to reach the hotel by 3:45pm on Sunday for the meeting.

He said Khaleda will provide Modi with some documents on “vote fraud” in the January-5 (2014) national and April-28 city polls, and the government’s repressive acts.

Another party leader said the BNP chief will also make clear her party’s anti-militancy stance and assure Modi that her party will never patronize religious fundamentalists and Indian separatists.
