MHA affidavit in Priya Pillai case; raise serious questions
Samajwadi Jan Parishad’s Madhya Pradesh unit and many other people’s movements of the state took strong exception to the affidavit – filed in the Delhi High Court by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) justifying offloading of Mahan Sangharsh Samittee and Greenpeace activist Priya Pillai from travel to U.K. Anurag Modi and its M. P. state president Rajendra Gadhwal , national secretary of the SJP and Madhuri, senior activist of Jagrut Adivasi Dalit si Sangathan, Mangal Singh of Shramik Adivasi Sangathan and Fagram of Kisan Adivasi Sangathan In its press statement said: how a government who has sworn ( in affidavit) critical of the reports of the parliamentary and other right groups of the country like U.K.; USA and EU groups, can allow them to be some of the major investors in its “Make in India” dream – it raises serious question on the plan? And, in the given scenario, how does the government of India expect people’s movements and right groups – those opposing these projects on many accounts – not to be skeptical and critical of these investments? The action of the MHA is sounding threatening bell to all the movements across the country, it demonstrates that the Government of India is hiding some of the serious issues and biased reports of these countries and it is more worrying when the government is bent on gagging the voice of dissent at all the cost; that would shame even our colonial ruler.
The groups said: while the GOI is free to invite foreign investors, stating of the facts and figures before representatives of that country doesn’t amount maligning India’s image; rather, at the time when freedom of the speech is the issue the world over, by not allowing Ms. Priya Pillai to travel abroad and have its say on the Mahan project in Singraulli, M. P. state, India is maligning its image on freedom speech world over. Now, the issue is less about Greenpeace’s stand on Mahan and its more about one’s right to dissent. It’s quite hilarious and misconceived of GOI that in today’s electronically globalised world, in order to gag the dissent the medieval ways of not allowing to travel would work.
MHA’s stand vindicate the long standing point of people’s movements of India that the foreign company and countries are not coming in India with the clean hands and intention to help build Indian economy, but, rather, they have some other motive - and the obvious one is: to usurp India’s resources and destroy its environment ! Narendra Modi government, which has recently agreed on controversial nuclear deal with the USA and is on the spree of foreign tours and inviting heads of the industrial nation and its corporate, has no moral and legal right to prevent activists to travel abroad to raise their view points . It is a sovereign right of the people of the host country to democratically oppose any wrong done to them; their resources and; environment by the corporate of any foreign country.
