P.M. Modi has made a public statement widely reported in the media that the Army will not' forgive us 'if we remain sleeping.
In a democracy, the army has to remain under the elected government -sleeping or wide awake- and does not have the right to 'forgive' or punish the government or the people.

This right vests in the people and they have been exercising it.
They punished Indira Gandhi in1977. They also punished NDA government in 2004 and UPA II in 2014.
The army has been forgiving or punishing the government in neighbouring Pakistan.
General Ayub Khan punished the elected goverment by taking it over in 1958, General Zia ul Haque in 1970s by overthrowing the government of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Parvez Musarraf by overthrowing the government of Nawaz Sharif.

Our Armed Forces work under the elected government and keep aloof from politics.
Modiji does not intend to politicise it, but does not realise that his tantalising it for political gains may lead to unforseen result. His statement is bound to make the army think that they have a duty to judge whether the government is 'sleeping ' and the right not to forgive a sleeping government and punish it.
The idea has originated from no less a person than an elected Prime Minister and is bound to grow and take a life of its own.
P.M.Modi should stop playing with fire for electoral gain in the interest of democracy and the country.
