Where do stand the Indian Scribes?
I wonder what happened to Indian Press! We dare not to blackout those politicians who happen to be responsible for the killing of Media persons one after one. Nor we see any resistance in Indian Press whatsoever. This suicidal apathy of the Press has made the journalists in India so soft targets these days.
Where do stand the Scribes?
Now journalism in India seems to be endangered as much as blogging in Bangladesh!
During colonial period, Indian Press represented people's resistance. Nehru, Gandhi and Netaji used to publish newspapers. Kaji Nazrul Islam was a scribe. We know about the murder of Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi in Kanpur.
In independent India, media led the fight against Emergency. Political resistance got momentum with the fight of the Press against censorship.
In 1981, while I have just joined PRESS in 1980, we witnessed a nationwide resistance against Press Bill introduced by DR. Jagannath Mishra.
In those days, the trend was to publish lead on anything that PM, CM and Governor used to speak. Resistance of Press Bill in Bihar saw a reverse. Complete blackout of news that meant government publicity.
Since then, No PM CM or governor speaking makes a lead in Indian Press unless it relates to major policy making or decisive governance.

Attacks continued on Bangladesh Intelligentsia without any break. But they continue their fight though many of the journalists, writers, poets and professors have been killed since 1971.
For example, Shahryar Kabir, the writer, filmmaker, poet and human right activist who published encyclopaedia on minority persecution in Bangladesh has to carry a gun to defend himself and he happens to be on top of the Killing list, but he stands rock solid.
