· August 21, 2013: Rationalist Narendra Dhabolkar shot dead in Pune while on a morning walk. The killers are still at large
· January 13, 2010: RTI activist Satish Shetty stabbed to death after his morning walk. After more than three years, the CBI filed a closure report. In Febuary 2015, the CBI decided to launch a fresh investigation after receiving fresh evidence
The cold-blooded murder of veteran Communist leader and social activist Govind Pansare in Kolhapur, has exposed the failure of the entire machinery of the state and its powerful intelligence to bring the culprits to book. After more than two months, the investigations into this incident have still not yielded any result. While, in Shetty’s case, the CBI filed a closure report last year and re-opened investigations in February this year, there is no progress in the investigations into the killings of Narendra Dhabolkar. A few days ago, the Maharashtra government has announced that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) will probe the murder of Govind Pansare.
Thus far, there is no confidence in the nature of investigations by law enforcing agencies. Instead, we have reports of senior police officers indulging in ludicrous methods like black magic to aid them in their investigations!
Hum Aazaadiyon Ke Haq Mein (HAKHM) is organizing a public meeting on April 29, 2015 at 4p.m. at the Press Club, Mumbai to focus on the need for greater transparency and accountability into these investigations and to determine why the guilty are not being brought to book as yet,.
Megha Pansare, daughter-in-law of Com. Govind Pansare, Mukta Dhabolkar, daughter of Narendra Dhabolkar and Sandeep Shetty, brother of RTI activist Satish Shetty, will share their assessment of the status of the investigations into the killings and their demands for justice.
In Solidarity,
Lara Jesani
