Will you stand with China's imprisoned writers?
Dear PEN Friends, colleagues & supporters,
On 10 December 2016, we marked Human Rights Day by focusing our campaigning on the extreme limits to free expression in China.
We published a letter to the Chinese president Xi Jinping in the Guardian calling on him to end his government’s fierce crackdown on writers and dissidents.
Writers such as Isabel Allende, JM Coetzee, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Yann Martel, Elif Shafak, Salman Rushdie, Hanan al-Shaykh, Colm Toibin, Margaret Atwood, and many of you added your name in support of this important call.
Our friends and colleagues are languishing behind bars. Writers and publishers are being held under house arrest or incommunicado.

We cannot stand by and be silent while so many writers and activist are losing their voices, their homes and their lives.
Last week, Nobel Laureate Mario Vargas Llosa and world-renowned artist and human rights defender Ai WeiWei added their names to our campaign.
We want as many PEN members, writers, readers, publishers, activists and supporters to join us in solidarity with writers in China and in our refusal to be complicit in their silencing.
We will continue to gather support over the coming months and on World Press Freedom Day we will deliver the letter, with a full list of signatories, to the Chinese Embassy in London.
